Kevin Gaides can walk – slowly and with mobility aids – but he can walk after being paralyzed from the chest down for 17 years. Kevin traveled to India more than two years ago for embryonic stem cells injections (and has returned for two more sessions). Immediately Kevin could wiggle a toe. A year after the first treatment Kevin could walk. His bladder control has returned and other organs are working like they used to also. Kevin paid $70000 for the stem cells and says he’s 70 per cent cured. His doctor Geeta Shroff at the Nu Tech Mediworld in New Delhi says the cells come from a non-viable 2 to 5 day old embryo in 2000 that was going to be thrown away. Dr. Shroff has treated more than 800 patients with the same cell line and says her success rate is greater than 90 per cent. Shroff admits success is subjective – some patients recover greater sensation while others see a full recovery.
